In class this week, we did a class project on the novel The Count of Monte Cristo. Each student would choose his/her own page from the book and they would have to illustrate it in their own point of view. My teacher got the idea from a video that illustrated every page of Moby Dick. This is the video that he based the project on.
He was very lenient on how we had to do it, so some students chose to draw it, some chose to create a collage, and some chose to create pictures on their computers. My teacher would then take all of the pictures and put it in a video. It’s like telling a story but with only images and music. At first, I had no idea what to do for the project, because ever since I was little, I wasn’t good at anything arts and crafts related. Then, my teacher said that “art [was] about taking risks.” It made me realize that I shouldn’t be self-conscious about what my picture would look like as long as I am confident about it and I know that put all of my effort into it. However, not everyone needs to express themselves through art (like me). A lot of people do it through things like fashion and music. Either way, all you need to do is be yourself, because “those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.” You may be embarrassed about the music you listen to, the clothes you wear, the things you say, but in the end the people who are actually important are the ones who don’t care about those imperfections. Just don’t listen to those people who try and bring others down, because everyone is imperfect. It’s like one of earlier posts on this blog said, everyone is perfectly imperfect and our imperfections are beautiful. Embrace yourself and make a lasting impression on the world. Take a risk and don’t hold back! You will find people who are able to accept your unique qualities whether it’s your family or your friends. Don’t try to hide whatever makes you stand out in a crowd. Don’t let someone dim your light.
Be special and make this world a more interesting and fun place, because if everyone were the same, then life would be very boring and predictable. I know that it’s a lot easier said than done, but maybe the next time someone asks you “What did you think of that?” you might answer with an honest opinion and not with what you think that person would want to hear. Be who you are. Say what you want to say. Wear what you want to wear. You are a one-of-a-kind so don’t change anything.
